3 Actions to Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude Today

Sure! It’s easy to complain about the job you hate, the boyfriend that’s not there yet or the kids that drive you crazy. Unfortunately, we live in a society that doesn’t value the beauty of the present moment. It’s like the quote by John Lennon. ““When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down happy. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”

 

We often look outside of ourselves for happiness. But, we never end up feeling satisfied. Content. Enough. We come from a scarcity mindset rather than an abundant mindset. We search for more and more never feeling grateful for what is already in front of us. The irony is when we finally have more and more, we complain about it being too much or still not enough.

I couldn’t wait to be a grown-up to have the fancy car, the big house, the perfect job, and the perfect family. I never thought about wanting to be grown-up to simply be happy. I thought things equated to happiness. Until I had those things and still found myself unfulfilled. This is when I went in search of a better way. I now learned that being grateful raises our energetic vibration so we can become a match for all good things, it helps us to see the blessing in every adversity, and it allows us to attract more in our lives to be grateful for.

 


 

Rather quickly, I got divorced, sold my house, quit my full-time teaching job and overhauled my whole entire vision of what I thought happiness was. I gave up what so many of us hang onto to feel important. Significant. Enough. Instead, I found myself in the pursuit of happiness away from all the bulls**t standards that society put upon me. I let go of all of the “things” that I thought made me happy and instead focused on my internal happiness.

 

Pure self-love became my focus. I became thankful for my health, my children’s smiling faces, the beauty in nature, and the connection to myself. I became grateful for a delicious meal, a good book, a smiling exchange with a stranger, a cozy candle and a lit fire. I realized I had pure love and happiness around me the whole time that I was too blind to see in the past. This is when I became truly fulfilled. When I became thankful for all that I already had. The more thankful I became, the more the Universe provided me with more to be thankful for.

 

3 Ways to Begin Having an Attitude of Gratitude Today:

 

1. KEEP A GRATITUDE JOURNAL

Being grateful is an attitude of abundance. It creates a shift in our energy like no other. We can’t experience a more positive serving emotion than gratitude. How often do you allow yourself to feel this emotion? Gratitude in general makes us happier in and of itself.

 

At night before I go to bed, I take 5 minutes to write at least 5 things that I am grateful for all throughout the day. I list everything that I am grateful for starting with my eyes opening in the morning, my feet touching the ground, and everything in between. I focus on the feelings of gratitude as I am writing and feel so grateful for being as abundant as I am. Where attention goes, energy flows. Where energy flows, like energy follows.

2. SAY THANK YOU

Say thank you for everything and anything that comes your way. So often, we feel entitled. When someone gives us something, we may take it for granted instead of realizing that we may not always be lucky enough to have this blessing. Or we feel that it is still not enough for the big picture that we have in our minds of what we want. This is the scarcity mindset. Being grateful for every penny leads to more and more pennies to be grateful for. When I went to Atlantic City recently and was playing the game of roulette, this guy giggled at me because everytime I won, I said aloud, “Thank you” to the Universe. I was so grateful for every little bit and didn’t focus on it not being enough. I was grateful for the butterflies in my stomach that each win brought me and how it made me feel. I didn’t even care how much I was winning.

 

As each foot touches the ground in the morning, I always say thank you. When a meal comes, I say thank you. When I see a beautiful sunrise, I say thank you. I say thank you for everything and anything.

3. STAY IN THE PRESENT MOMENT

We are made up of thoughts. Think about how many thoughts you have on a daily basis. These thoughts force us to flee the present moment without even realizing it. Think about how sometimes when you are driving, all of a sudden you’ve arrived at your destination and have no idea how you got there because you were thinking the whole time. You missed out on the beautiful trees, your favorite song on the radio, how your hands feel against the smooth steering wheel, how warm your seat is thanks to your seat warmer, how free you feel driving on the open road, how lucky you are to have the privilege of going anywhere you want.

What about when you eat an apple? Do you appreciate the crunch into the apple? How healthy your teeth are to be able to crunch into it? Do you savor the sweet juice dripping down your mouth? Do you notice the beauty in its color and shape? Are you amazed at how nature was able to create it and how rich in nutrients it is for your body? Do you thank your body for digesting it? Or do you think about the deadline you have to meet as soon as your apple is in the garbage? You can feel the different energy each scenario brings.

 

Remember that a shift in your perception from an attitude of lack to an attitude of gratitude creates more for you to be grateful for. If coming from a scarcity mindset hasn’t worked for you yet, why not try these simple tricks to start changing your reality today?
