About Ball Watches

Webb C. BALL was born on October 6th, 1847 in Fredericktown, Ohio.  He was the first watchmaker to use time signals when Standard Time was implemented in 1883. This was an important milestone which brought accurate time to Ohio railways. The Kipton train disaster brought the need for accurate time-keeping to the attention of Lake Shore officials who decided to enlist the help of BALL to investing Time and Watch conditions and to create a proper inspection system for them. 

BALL immediately began to work on this problem and he created an inspection system to check the watches of all railroad workers every fortnight. The inspections were conducted by a set of approved watchmakers who would verify watches were up to BALL’s standards which did not allow watches to have variations greater than 30 seconds. 

BALL had created the first successful time system for the railroad which was implemented as a standard for all railroads. This system was instrumental in establishing uniformity and accuracy in timekeeping. This system lead to widespread acceptance of railroad watches as the most accurate timekeepers in the land. Whenever people would ask a railroad worker for the time they knew they would get an accurate answer. 

Today, BALL watches are some of the most sought after and respected watches in the U.S. and they continue to create 21st century products that keep up with consumer preferences.
