About Baume et Mercier Watches

The Baume et Mercier company was founded in 1830 and is known for creating sporty chronographs. The Baume family opened up the first watch shop in Les Bois, Switzerland in 1830.  This small company soon turned into a large company with thriving industrial practices and commercial flair that was set in place by the two Baume brothers. Their motto was based on creating perfect, high quality watches and they followed that ethos to the letter. The objective of this company was to create quality traditional watches that used the latest technological breakthroughs in watch-making.
 
In 1918 at the end of WWI, many changes began to take place in the watch industry, in the arts and in society. The emancipation of women led to the widespread creation of ladies’ jewelry and watches. This trend encouraged watchmakers to miniaturize watch movements. During 1918, Paul Mercier and William Baume joined forces despite their opposite temperaments. These men shared the vision of contemporary watchmaking. Baume dealt with the technical aspects of the watches while Mercier handled the commercial activity and design aspects. 

In 1919, just a year after Baume et Mercier was set up, the company received the Geneva Hallmark or “Poinçon de Genève” award – the highest award given for fine craftsmanship in the watch-making business.  Over a year later, Baume et Mercier was the largest watch brand that produced the most watches certified with this coveted quality label.
